RESUMO

Patient information plays a pivotal role in preparing individuals for hospital visits and empowering them to actively participate in decision-making processes regarding their healthcare. However, many patients face challenges related to reading comprehension. In response, podcasts have become a popular, user-friendly medium for sharing essential and easily understandable information in an engaging format. The aim of the present project was to use a user-centered approach to develop podcasts providing patient information prior to hospital visits. We aimed to describe the steps of the development in detail with the purpose of inspiring podcast development in the future. In Phase 1 we conducted interviews with patients and focus groups with clinicians based on the "empathy map" method, with the purpose of exploring patients' needs on which to subsequently build the podcasts' content and format. In Phase 2 we produced and refined the podcasts on the basis of feedback from clinician- and patients representatives. Our results indicated the importance of clear and concise language, personalization of communication, and content alignment with patients' needs. Our project resulted in a description of each step of the development that can be used as inspiration for others who wish to take a user-centered approach to podcast development.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the most appropriate delay to start a webinar. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on weekly general staff scientific webinars held by the Institute of Human Virology (IHV), University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, USA. 35 observations were made at arbitrary chosen times of three consecutive IHV webinars. After standardizing the number of participants, a 4th-degree polynomial fit was applied to the data. A cost function was defined as the sum of the time wasted for those who attended the webinar early and the lost for those who attend with delay. The cost function was minimized to compute the most appropriate delay to start the webinar. RESULTS: The model could explain almost 95% of the observed variance in the number of participants. Normally, half of the participants attended the meeting at the webinar set starting time. The cost was a minimum if the webinar was delayed for about 3 minutes. CONCLUSION: It seems that the most appropriate time for starting the IHV general staff meetings is around 3 minutes after the webinar set starting time.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a video versus that of a paper handout for explaining operative instructions for hand and upper extremity surgeries to patients. We aimed to compare patient performance using a knowledge-based questionnaire. In addition, we aimed to compare how helpful patients found their assigned operative instructions. METHODS: This was a randomized trial of 60 patients undergoing same-day hand and upper extremity surgeries. The patients were randomized to receive educational material outlining operative instructions, either in the form of a video link or a paper handout. At the first postoperative visit, the patients' comprehension of the content was evaluated using a questionnaire. The primary outcomes included the number of questions answered correctly and patient-reported evaluation of the provided instructions on a scale of 1-5. RESULTS: Patients who received video instructions scored higher in the questionnaire than those in the paper instructions group (paper: 58% correct; video: 76% correct). Moreover, patients in the video group were significantly more likely to answer questions pertaining to opioid use correctly. A higher proportion of patients in the video group than in the paper group found the information "extremely" or "very" helpful. CONCLUSIONS: This study found that the patients demonstrated greater comprehension of the operative instructions when these were administered in a video format than when these were administered as a printed handout. In particular, the results suggest that video-based education specifically improves patients' comprehension of proper opioid use. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: There appears to be utility in implementing videos for patient education purposes, particularly in the setting of operative instructions for same-day surgical procedures.

RESUMO

Habits of Consulting Material with Sexual Content on Internet in a Sample of University Students. Internet has shaped a new framework of socialization that affects sexuality and interpersonal relationships, especially in adolescents and young adults. The overall aim of this study was to describe the access and display patterns of online sexual material among university students and to analyze inter-gender differences. Participants were 486 university students, 71.4% female, aged between 18 and 30 years. A questionnaire developed specifically for the research was administered to explore the patterns and habits of use of sexual material through social networks and the internet. We found significant gender differences in age of onset viewing sexual content material, time spent, the reasons for access and preferences for specific platforms -i.e., a gender-differential pattern of use and consumption of sexual material on the internet. Males starts earlier than females, spends more time viewing this type of material and shows a greater preference for specific platforms. Knowing the patterns of use and habits of this material is fundamental to be able to prevent situations of misuse and abuse, as well as to design preventive programs on the risks of sexual behavior in young adults (AU)

Introduction: Radio and podcast listeners deduce personality traits when they listen to presenters, exclusively from the speech of these professionals. Objective: To identify the factors that interfere in the attribution of personality characteristics based on the voice, and to discuss how the audience ́s judgment can modify the performance of radio and podcast presenters. Methods: Through initial bibliographic survey, bibliographical references on voice judgment research were presented, considering sociocultural and gender aspects, and the interference of stereotypes in the behavior and speech of individuals. Results:Surveys of personality judgment by voice indicate that the listeners; assessment is based on the most striking and socially valued personality traits: the stereotypes. Considering that the same values are also shared by communicators, it is possible to suppose that they try imprinting characteristics in their speech that please the public. Conclusion: The attempt to correspond to stereotypes seems to result in the standardization of the speech of radio and podcast communicators.

PURPOSE: Medical podcasts have grown in popularity, but little is known about their didactic methods. This study sought to systemically describe the pedagogical approach employed by the 100 most popular medical podcasts in the United States. This study also aimed to assess factors related to quality control and conflicts of interest in podcasting. METHODS: The authors averaged the rank positions for Apple podcasts in the Medicine category in the United States from 06/01/18 to 09/30/20 to generate a list of the 100 highest-ranked medical podcasts. They developed and validated a categorization system of didactic methods based on Bloom's taxonomy and collected data on didactic methods, as well as podcast affiliation, target audience, format, advertising, continuing medical education (CME) offerings, and presence of a reference list or review process. RESULTS: Of the 100 most popular medical podcasts, 91 are educational. Of those, 51 are podcasts intended for physician education (PIPEs) while 40 are intended for other audiences, including the general public, nurses, and physical therapists. Compared with podcasts intended for other audiences, PIPEs engage higher levels of Bloom's taxonomy (p < 0.001). Among PIPEs, 18 (35.2%) are affiliated with an individual, 16 (31.4%) with a company, and 12 (23.5%) with a professional journal. 38 PIPEs (74.5%) are targeted toward all levels of medical learners. PIPEs are significantly more likely to list references or have a peer review process in place (n = 37, 72.5% vs. n = 15, 37.5%, p = 0.001) and offer CME credits (n = 20, 39.2% vs. n = 2, 5.0%, p < 0.001) than podcasts intended for other audiences. CONCLUSIONS: Medical podcasts employ a variety of didactic methods, including those ranked highly on Bloom's taxonomy. Unlike traditional medical education, PIPEs are commonly produced by individuals or companies and targeted to all levels of medical learners.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic created challenges in surgical education that expedited the development of virtual learning. Virtual rotations have been one such solution. However, they require co-ordination and technological equipment to create a meaningful, interactive experience for students. METHODS: Various otolaryngology surgical procedures were live-streamed during a two-week virtual rotation for medical students. A mobile audiovisual cart comprising a computer mounted with a webcam and microphone/speaker were utilised to live-stream from four sources: video-assisted telescope operating monitor ('VITOM') exoscope, microscope, endoscope and room camera. A dedicated faculty member, who was not the operating surgeon, was present to facilitate students' understanding of the procedure. CONCLUSION: A wide breadth of otolaryngology surgical procedures were live-streamed via a mobile audiovisual computer, including views of the room, endoscopic views, microscopic views and open views via an exoscope (video-assisted telescope operating monitor). This virtual rotation set-up, along with the dedicated faculty facilitator, reduced the burden on the operating surgeon and enhanced students' learning experience.
